McHenry, California facts for kids
McHenry is a small, quiet place in Stanislaus County, California. It's not a city or a town with its own government. Instead, it's an unincorporated community, which means it's a group of homes and businesses that are part of the larger county. McHenry is located about one mile north of the city of Modesto, California.
History of McHenry
McHenry didn't start as a planned town. Instead, people simply began to settle there. In the 1870s, families built farmhouses and small shops in the area. This happened because McHenry Avenue, an important road, crossed through this spot.
The area was named after Robert McHenry. He was a well-known local banker and rancher. He also owned the famous McHenry Mansion, a historic home in the region.
