History of the Company
The McMyler-Interstate Company was born when four smaller businesses decided to join forces. This process is called a merger. By working together, they could share their skills and build even bigger and better machines.
The Four Companies
The four companies that came together in 1910 were:
- The Excelsior Iron Works, which started in the 1870s.
- The McMyler Manufacturing Co., which began its work in the 1880s.
- Kaltenbach & Griess, Consulting and Contracting Engineers, a company of expert engineers formed in 1897.
- The Interstate Engineering Co., which was created in 1902.
Building Giant Machines
McMyler-Interstate became famous for its powerful and large-scale equipment. They designed and built machines that were essential for industries like shipping and mining.
The League Island Crane
One of the company's most incredible creations was a giant hammerhead crane built for the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard just after World War I. A hammerhead crane is a huge crane that rotates and is shaped like a giant "T".
The company built the crane in Bedford in 1919 and called it the "League Island Crane." It was a true monster machine for its time.
- It could lift up to 350 tons, which is like lifting about 50 elephants at once!
- The crane itself weighed 3,500 tons.
- It was so big that it had to be shipped to the shipyard in pieces and put together there.
When it was built, the League Island Crane was the largest crane in the entire world. For many years, it was also the biggest and strongest crane used by the U.S. Navy. It was used to lift heavy parts like guns and armor onto warships.
