The Meadows Story
How It Began
The Meadows story started on July 4, 1950. That's when Delbert Meadows opened a small custard stand in Duncansville, Pennsylvania. [1] His idea was to create a delicious, creamy frozen treat for everyone to enjoy.
Over the years, the Meadows family added more fun things to their location. They built batting cages, a miniature golf course, and even go-karts. This made the Duncansville spot a famous landmark in western Pennsylvania. Today, Delbert's sons, Dick, Jay, and Joel Meadows, still own and run this original location.
The Secret Recipe
The frozen custard at The Meadows uses a special recipe that has been in the Meadows family for many years. On July 4, 1950, Delbert and his brothers, J.V. and Richard, worked with a company called Seal-Test dairy. Together, they created the unique frozen custard recipe that is still used today.
When Seal-Test dairy closed, another company, Galliker's Dairy, took over making the recipe. So, every scoop of Meadows frozen custard still tastes just like it did in 1950!
What's on the Menu?
The Meadows menu has lots of tasty treats. You can find creamy shakes and delicious sundaes. They also offer "arctic swirls," which mix candy or cookies into the custard. Other favorites include banana splits, root beer floats, and strawberry shortcakes. If you like fruit, they have smoothies too. Of course, you can always get a classic cone!
Meadows Today
Growing Across States
In 2003, the Meadows brothers (Dick, Jay, and Joe) sold the Meadows business to Gardner Meadows Inc. Since then, the company has opened many new locations. These new shops are called franchises. Each one is owned and run by different people.
The Meadows shops are now found in many towns across Pennsylvania and Maryland. There are also locations in North Carolina and Virginia. Even after more than 50 years, every Meadows shop serves the same special recipe that started in 1950. The original location in Hollidaysburg was rebuilt and reopened on April 18, 2014.
International Reach
The Meadows Frozen Custard has even gone global! Australia's very first Meadows store opened in Franklin (Canberra) in 2016. This shows how popular their frozen custard has become around the world.
On TV!
In 2008, a TV show called "Taste of America" visited The Meadows. This show, on the Travel Channel, filmed a special part about the frozen custard stand. The host, Mark DeCarlo, tried the famous frozen custard. He also talked with the Meadows family and many loyal customers. The crew even got to see how the frozen custard is made and prepared.
