Meads is a small, unincorporated community in Boyd County, Kentucky, in the United States. An unincorporated community means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. Meads is located along a major road called U.S. Highway 60, just south of the larger city of Ashland.

Where is Meads Located?

Meads is found where U.S. Route 60 meets two other roads: Kentucky Route 538 and Mead-Springer Road. This crossroads is like the center of the community. A railroad track, which used to be part of the C&O railroad and is now CSX, still runs through Meads.

How Meads Got Its Name

The community of Meads was named after a train station that used to be there. This station was called Mead's Station. It also had a general store, which was a place where people could buy all sorts of things. Over time, the train station and store closed down. Today, not much is left of the original community except for the railroad tracks and a few houses.

Meads Today: A Growing Community

In the early 1970s, U.S. Highway 60 was improved and made better. This helped Meads to grow and change. It started to become a suburb of Ashland, meaning it became a residential area close to the bigger city.

New Homes and Businesses

  • Rockdale Subdivision: In 1974, a large neighborhood called Rockdale was built on the hills above Meads. It included hundreds of homes, making it a popular place for families to live.
  • Mead Station Plaza: Later, in 1991, a shopping center called Mead Station Plaza was built. This plaza has more than 20 different stores and businesses. It serves people living in Meads and other nearby communities along U.S. Route 60. Since then, even more businesses have opened in the area.

Part of a Larger Area

Meads is part of a bigger region known as the Huntington-Ashland Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). An MSA is a group of cities and towns that are closely connected, usually by work and daily life. As of 2010, this larger area had a population of about 287,702 people. By 2013, new calculations showed the population had grown to around 363,000 people.
