MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center is a large hospital in Rosedale, Maryland. It is part of MedStar Health, a group of hospitals and health care centers. This hospital is one of the biggest in Maryland.

A Look at the Hospital's History
MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center first opened in 1898. It was in West Baltimore and had 20 beds. This was the first hospital in that community.
In 1969, the hospital moved to a new, larger building. This new location was in eastern Baltimore County. It had 325 beds, which was a big increase.
Helping Patients in Emergencies
The hospital's Emergency Department is very busy. It treats about 300 patients every day. This makes it one of the busiest emergency rooms in Maryland.
Specialized Care and Growth
In 2004, the hospital opened the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Cancer Institute. This center focuses on different types of cancer. These include melanoma, gynecologic cancer, and breast cancer.
The hospital also built a large new patient tower. This tower is about 356,000 square feet. Construction started in 2007 and finished in 2010. This new building helped the hospital serve more people.
Awards and Recognition
MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center has received many important awards. The American College of Surgeons recognized it as a Teaching Hospital Cancer Center. This means it helps train future doctors in cancer care.
In 2008, it became a Magnet hospital for nursing. This award shows excellent nursing care. The hospital received this award again in 2013.
The Delmarva Foundation has given the hospital its highest honor. This is the Excellence Award for Quality for Hospitals. MedStar Franklin Square received this award in 2009, 2011, and 2012.
U.S. News & World Report also ranked the hospital highly. It was ranked as the third best hospital in Maryland. It was also third best in the Baltimore metropolitan area. The hospital was also among the top 50 "Best Hospitals" in the nation. This was for its care in Gastroenterology and Digestive system (GI) surgery. This hospital has been on this national list for four years in a row.
