MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center is a large hospital in Rosedale, Maryland. It is part of MedStar Health. This hospital is the third biggest in Maryland. It has over 3,500 employees, making it one of the largest employers in Baltimore County.
The hospital building is located near the Community College of Baltimore County - Essex. Students studying health programs often come here for hands-on training.

Hospital History
Early Beginnings
MedStar Franklin Square first opened its doors in 1898. It started with just 20 beds. This was the very first hospital in the West Baltimore community.
Moving and Growing
In 1969, the hospital moved to a new, larger building. This new facility was in eastern Baltimore County. It had 325 beds, much more space than the original hospital.
Busy Emergency Room
The Emergency Department at MedStar Franklin Square is very busy. It helps about 300 patients every day. This makes it one of the busiest emergency rooms in Maryland.
New Buildings and Care
In 2004, the hospital opened the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Cancer Institute. This center helps people with different types of cancer. It focuses on skin cancer, female cancers, and breast cancer.
Later, the hospital built a large new patient tower. This tower is about 356,000 square feet. Construction started in 2007 and finished in 2010.
Awards and Recognition
MedStar Franklin Square has received many important awards. The American College of Surgeons recognized it as a top Teaching Hospital Cancer Center. In 2008, it was named a Magnet hospital for nursing. This award means it has excellent nursing care. It received this award again in 2013.
The hospital also won the Excellence Award for Quality for Hospitals. This award came from the Delmarva Foundation in 2009, 2011, and 2012.
U.S. News & World Report ranked MedStar Franklin Square as the third best hospital in Maryland. It was also ranked third in the Baltimore metropolitan area. The hospital was even named one of the top 50 "Best Hospitals" in the country. This was for its care in Gastroenterology (stomach and gut health) and Digestive system (GI) surgery. This was the fourth year in a row it received this high ranking.
