Medical papyri facts for kids

The medical papyri are very old Egyptian writings. They are like ancient medical textbooks. These texts were written on papyrus, a thick paper-like material. They tell us a lot about how people in ancient Egypt understood health and sickness.
These special papyri explain different diseases. They also describe how ancient Egyptian doctors figured out what was wrong with a patient. Plus, they list many ways to treat illnesses. Some treatments were traditional, like using herbs. Others involved magical spells.
Historians believe there were many more medical papyri. Sadly, many were lost over time. Some were probably taken by grave robbers. A big study of these papyri was done by Berlin University. It was called "Medizin der alten Agypter," which means "Medicine of ancient Egypt."
Ancient Egyptian Medical Papyri
Ancient Egyptian medicine was a mix of science and magic. People often believed that illnesses came from evil spirits. So, they used special charms called amulets or magical spells to try and get better.
After trying magic, doctors would then give other medical treatments. Priests often wrote down these medical instructions. They put them on long scrolls made of papyrus. These scrolls are what we now call the medical papyri. They give us a peek into the healing practices of a very old civilization.
