Discovering Medina's Past
Medina started as a small settlement around 1865. Early families built a sawmill there. By 1880, Medina had its own post office. The community grew to include a corn mill, a hotel, and several stores. About 150 people lived there, many of them farmers raising animals.
By 1914, Medina's population grew to 400. But during the Great Depression in the 1930s, many people left. The population dropped to 250 as folks looked for new jobs. Luckily, Medina bounced back! By the late 1940s, 475 people lived there. The town had more businesses and churches.
Medina: The Apple Capital
For a long time, people in Medina raised animals and offered hunting trips. But in the 1980s, something new arrived: apple farming! In 1980, the first apple orchard was planted. It had special dwarf apple trees. These trees were small but grew normal-sized apples. The first apples were sold in 1984.
These dwarf trees were amazing because they used less land. Their apples were also 40% sweeter than those from bigger trees! Soon, Medina had hundreds of thousands of apple trees. In 1990, they produced 100 tons of apples. More orchards were planted later.
Because of all these yummy apples, the Texas Department of Agriculture named Medina the "Apple Capital of Texas" in 1989. The very next year, Medina started the Medina Apple Festival. This fun event happens every year on the last Saturday in July. It attracts about 20,000 visitors!
Even though Medina is a small community, it has its own post office. Its ZIP code is 78055.
