How is a Megabit Used?
Megabits are most commonly used when talking about internet speed. When your internet provider says you have a "100 Mbps" connection, the "Mbps" stands for "megabits per second." This tells you how quickly data can travel to and from your computer.

Megabits vs. Megabytes

- A megabyte (MB) is typically used for file sizes. For example, a photo might be 2 MB, or a song might be 5 MB.
There are 8 bits in 1 byte. So, 1 megabyte (MB) is equal to 8 megabits (Mb). This means if you have a 100 Mbps internet connection, it will take about 8 seconds to download a 100 MB file.
Why is This Important?
Understanding megabits helps you make smart choices about your internet service. If you have many people in your home using the internet at the same time for streaming, gaming, and video calls, you'll need a higher Mbps speed to keep everyone happy.
