Discovering Mehar's Past
Mehar Taluka has a long history. Records show that in 1848, during the time of British rule, Mehar Taluka was created. It became a part of the Dadu District, with the town of Mehar as its main center. For a while, Mehar and the rest of Sindh were part of the Bombay Presidency of British India.
More than a hundred years ago, a book called the Imperial Gazetteer of India described Mehar Taluka. It said the area was about 328 square miles. In 1901, about 58,434 people lived there. The book also mentioned that Mehar Taluka had 64 villages.
Farming and Water in the Old Days
The land in Mehar Taluka was watered by the Western Nāra canal and its smaller channels. Farmers mainly grew jowār (a type of grain) and rice. Before big floods in 1874, Mehar was very fertile. However, after the floods, the water became salty, and many gardens were lost. Farming near the hills to the west depended completely on rainfall.
