How Meiers Corners Got Its Name
The name "Meiers Corners" comes from an important person from the 1700s. His name was Joachim Meier, and he was from the Netherlands. He lived in a very old house called the Martling-Cozine House. This house was one of the oldest private homes on Staten Island. It stood near Watchogue Road and Bradley Avenue until it was taken down in 1981.
Susan E. Wagner High School
As you go south from Victory Boulevard, the land slowly gets higher. The southern part of Meiers Corners is on a high area. This area is sometimes called Manor Heights. Here you will find Susan E. Wagner High School. This school opened in 1968. It was named after the wife of a former mayor, Robert F. Wagner Jr.. The school was built because many more people moved to Staten Island. This happened after the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge opened in 1964. More people meant more students, so a new school was needed.
