Meike Akveld facts for kids
Meike Maria Elisabeth Akveld is a Swiss mathematician and author. She is interested in different areas of mathematics, like knot theory (the study of mathematical knots), symplectic geometry (a special kind of geometry), and how to teach mathematics.
She works as a senior scientist and lecturer at ETH Zurich, which is a famous university in Switzerland. She also helps organize the Mathematical Kangaroo competitions in Switzerland. This is a popular math contest for students. Meike Akveld is also the president of the Association Kangourou sans Frontières, an international group that works to make mathematics fun and popular for everyone.
Meike Akveld's Education
Meike Akveld studied at several well-known universities. She earned her first degree from the University of Warwick in the UK. Later, she continued her studies at the University of Cambridge, also in the UK.
In 2000, she earned her Ph.D. (a high-level university degree) from ETH Zurich. Her Ph.D. research looked at complex math ideas related to geometry and knots.
Books by Meike Akveld
Meike Akveld has written or helped write many mathematics books. Some of her books are:
- Canonical metrics in Kähler geometry (2000) – This book is based on notes she took from lectures by another mathematician, Tian Gang.
- Knoten in der Mathematik: Ein Spiel mit Schnüren, Bildern und Formeln (Knots in mathematics: A game with strings, pictures and formulas, 2007) – This book is about knots in mathematics and is written in German.
- Hofer geometry for Lagrangian loops: And a Legendrian Knot and a travelling wave (2008) – This book is about her Ph.D. research.
- Integrieren - do it yourself (2010) – This German book helps people learn about integration, a part of calculus. She wrote it with Ursula Eisler and Daniel Zogg.
- Knots Unravelled: From String to Mathematics (2011) – This book, written with Andrew Jobbings, explains how everyday knots connect to mathematics.
- Analysis I and Analysis II (2012 and 2015) – These are German textbooks about mathematical analysis, written with René Sperb.
- Knopen in de wiskunde (Knots in mathematics, 2015) – This is a Dutch version of her book about knots, written with Ab van der Roest.
- Mathe mit dem Känguru 5: Die schönsten Aufgaben von 2015 bis 2019 (Math with the kangaroo 5: The most beautiful problems from 2015 to 2019, 2019) – This German book shares fun problems from the Mathematical Kangaroo competition. She wrote it with Alexander Unger, Monika Noack, and Robert Geretschläger.
