Meisha Ross Porter (born November 18, 1973) is an American educator. She is known for her important work in schools. In 2021, she became the head of all public schools in New York City. This big job is called the Schools Chancellor. She was the 30th person to hold this role.

About Meisha Ross Porter
Early Life and Education
Meisha Ross Porter was born in Far Rockaway. She grew up in Jamaica, Queens, a part of New York City. She went to Queens Vocational and Technical High School. After high school, she studied at Hunter College. There, she earned a degree in English. She focused on different cultures in literature. She also studied Black and Puerto Rican history.
Her Journey in Education
Meisha Ross Porter started her career helping young people in the Bronx. She helped create a school called the Bronx School for Law, Government and Justice (BLGJ). She worked at BLGJ for 18 years. During that time, she was a community helper, a teacher, and an assistant principal. Eventually, she became the principal of the school.
In 2015, she became a Superintendent for District 11. This district covers many neighborhoods in the Northeast Bronx. She worked in this role for almost three years. In 2018, she was promoted to Bronx Executive Superintendent. In this job, she oversaw 361 schools. These schools had about 235,000 students in the Bronx.
Leading New York City Schools
On February 26, 2021, the Mayor of New York City, Bill de Blasio, announced a big change. He chose Meisha Ross Porter to be the new Schools Chancellor. The previous chancellor, Richard Carranza, was stepping down. This was a very important moment. Meisha Ross Porter became the first Black woman to be New York City's Schools Chancellor.
Awards and Continued Learning
Meisha Ross Porter has always continued her own education. She earned her master's degree from Mercy University. She also completed a special program to become a school district leader. She is currently working on her doctorate degree in education at Fordham University.
She has received special awards for her work. One of these is the Sojourner Truth Award. This award comes from the National Association of Negro Women. She has also been a fellow at the Aspen Institute. This means she was chosen to be part of a special group of leaders. She has also taught as a professor at a university (CUNY). She has studied leadership at Harvard University too.
