Mejicanos is a lively city in El Salvador. It is located in the San Salvador Department, which is part of the San Salvador metropolitan area. In 2009, about 160,751 people lived there.
Mejicanos is famous for its special local dish called "Yuca Frita con Merienda." This is a tasty fried cassava dish. The city also has a busy municipal market. Here, people can buy fresh groceries, vegetables, dairy products, and meat. Many of these items come from nearby villages.
The city is in a good spot, connecting to other towns like Cuscatancingo and San Salvador. Because Mejicanos is about 712 meters (2,336 feet) above sea level, it usually has a warm climate.
History of Mejicanos
Early Settlements
In 1524, Spanish explorers arrived and took control of the land known as Cuscatlán. This area is now El Salvador. They brought along indigenous allies from the Anahuac Valley in Mexico. These allies included Tlaxcaltecas, Aztecs, and Acolhuas.
After the land was settled, these Mexican allies made their homes in three main areas. One group settled north of what is now San Salvador. This is where the city of Mejicanos is located today. The other groups settled in areas that are now Barrio de Sonsonate and Canton Santa Maria in Usulután.
Becoming a City
The area was first known as "Villa of Mejicanos." Later, it officially became the "City of Mejicanos."
In 1823, an important battle happened in Mejicanos. General Vicente Filísola, from the Mexican Imperial Army, fought against the Salvadoran Republic Army. The Salvadorans were led by Colonel Antonio José Cañas. They were fighting because they did not want their land to be taken over by the Mexican Empire. The Salvadorans wanted to be independent.
After these historical events, Mejicanos became well-known for its street trade. Farmers and merchants would sell their goods, making the city a busy center for commerce.
