Mel Carter was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. When he was 16 years old, he began studying singing. His teacher was a famous singer named Little Jimmy Scott.

Mel started his music career in the early 1960s. He recorded songs for Sam Cooke's record label. In 1963, when he was 24, he had his first popular song, "When a Boy Falls in Love." Sam Cooke helped write this song.

His Biggest Hits

Mel Carter became very popular in the mid-1960s. He was especially good at singing pop ballads, which are slow, romantic songs. His biggest success was the song "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me". This song reached number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1965.

"Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me" sold over one million copies! This earned it a special award called a gold disc. Over the next year, he had other popular songs like "Band of Gold" and "All of a Sudden My Heart Sings."
