What Does This Plant Look Like?
Melaleuca kunzeoides is usually a shrub that grows up to about 1.5 meters (5 feet) tall. It has bark that feels like paper. Most of its leaves and branches are smooth and don't have any hairs. Only the very newest parts might have a few tiny hairs.
The leaves grow one after another along the stem. They are small, about 3 to 8 millimeters (0.1 to 0.3 inches) long and 1 to 2 millimeters (0.04 to 0.08 inches) wide. They are shaped like a narrow oval and come to a gentle point.
Flowers and Fruit
The flowers are a yellowish-green color. They grow in spikes at the ends of branches or between the leaves. Each spike can have anywhere from 5 to 17 individual flowers. Sometimes, flowers grow in pairs or groups of three.
Inside each flower, there are five groups of stamens. Stamens are the parts of a flower that produce pollen. Each group has 4 to 6 stamens. This plant usually flowers in April and November. After the flowers, small woody fruits called capsules grow. Each capsule is about 1.3 to 1.5 millimeters (0.05 to 0.06 inches) long.
How It Got Its Name
The plant Melaleuca kunzeoides was first officially described in 1984. A botanist named Byrnes gave it this name. He wrote about it in a science journal called Austrobaileya.
The second part of its name, kunzeoides, means "like Kunzea". This is because the plant looks a bit similar to some plants in another group called Kunzea.
Where It Grows
Melaleuca kunzeoides is found only in a specific area near a town called Adavale in central Queensland. The first plant that was studied and named came from about 20 kilometers (12 miles) north-west of Adavale. This special plant grows on private land.
Why It Needs Our Help
This plant is considered "vulnerable" by the Australian government. This means it is at risk of becoming endangered if we don't protect it. It is also listed in the IUCN Red Book of endangered plants. This book helps track plants and animals around the world that need protection. Protecting Melaleuca kunzeoides helps keep our natural world diverse and healthy.
