Melania Carolina Hotu Hey, born on February 8, 1959, is a politician from the Rapa Nui community in Chile. She has served as the Governor of Isla de Pascua Province, which is also known as Easter Island or Rapa Nui. This important island is part of Chile in Polynesia. She held this role during the first and second times Michelle Bachelet was President of Chile.
Leading Rapa Nui
Carolina Hotu Hey became the Governor of Easter Island on March 11, 2006. She was chosen by the newly elected Chilean President Michelle Bachelet. President Bachelet wanted to have more women in important government jobs. Before becoming governor, Hotu Hey worked on a program that helped young people on Rapa Nui.
During her time as governor, Easter Island faced some important challenges. These included people moving to the island from Chile, worries about losing the unique Rapa Nui culture, and ideas for new laws to give the island more control over its own affairs. Giving the island more control is called "autonomy."
In September 2015, she was chosen to be the governor of Easter Island for a second time. She continued in this role until March 16, 2018.
