Melanie Susan "Mel" Appleby (born July 11, 1966 – died January 18, 1990) was a talented English singer. She was one half of the popular 1980s music duo called Mel and Kim. Together with her sister, Kim, they had a huge hit song called "Respectable" which reached number one in the UK in 1987.

Melanie Appleby was born in Hackney, London, England. Her father was from Jamaica, and her mother was British.
Her Music Career
Melanie teamed up with her sister, Kim Appleby, to form the music duo Mel and Kim. They became very successful in the late 1980s. They had four songs that made it into the top ten on the UK music charts. Their biggest hit was "Respectable" in 1987, which went all the way to number one!
Their first album, F.L.M., was also very popular. It stayed on the UK charts for 25 weeks and sold enough copies to be certified platinum. This means it sold over 300,000 copies in the UK.
Later Life
Sadly, Melanie Appleby passed away in Westminster, London, on January 18, 1990. She was 23 years old. She had been receiving treatment for a serious illness and later developed pneumonia. Melanie is buried in East Finchley Cemetery.
