All About the Melrose Apple
Where Did the Melrose Apple Come From?
The Melrose apple was developed by a scientist named Freeman S. Howlett. He worked at the Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station in Wooster, Ohio. This special apple was first shared with the public during World War II. It was created by crossing two other well-known apples: the Jonathan apple and the Red Delicious apple.
What Does a Melrose Apple Look Like?
Melrose apples are usually large and have a somewhat flattened shape. Their skin is a mix of yellowish-green. Over this, you'll see streaks and patches of dark red. Sometimes, they also have small spots that look a bit rough, called russet.
Inside, the apple has creamy white flesh. It feels firm and has a slightly coarse texture. It's also very juicy!
How Does a Melrose Apple Taste?
The Melrose apple has a mildly acidic flavor. This means it's a little bit tart, but not too sour. Its taste is similar to the Jonathan apple, but it's not quite as tart.
When Can You Find Melrose Apples?
Melrose apples are ready to pick and enjoy starting in early October.
