Melzo is a small, quiet place in southern Jefferson County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and buildings, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.
You can find Melzo along Missouri Route E. It's just north of the line that separates Jefferson County from St. Francois County. If you travel about eight miles north, you'll reach the town of DeSoto. If you head south for about six miles, you'll find Bonne Terre.
The Story Behind Melzo's Name
Melzo has an interesting history, especially when it comes to how it got its name. For many years, people in the area used a special building called a post office. A post office is where people send and receive letters and packages.
A post office opened in Melzo in 1906. It was a very important place for the community. The person in charge of the post office was called a postmaster. An early postmaster in Melzo had a son. His son's first name was Melzo. The community was named after this young boy, Melzo Higginbotham. The post office served the area until it closed its doors in 1938.
