Early Life and Education
Mercedes Alonso was born on December 10, 1964. Her birthplace was Cortes de Baza, which is in the Province of Granada, Spain. She studied law at the University of Alicante. She earned her degree there.
Starting in Politics
Mercedes Alonso joined the People's Alliance Party in 1982. This was the start of her political career. Since 1991, she has served as a councilor in the city of Elche. A councilor is like a local representative. From 1995 to 1999, she was also a provincial deputy for Alicante. In this role, she was in charge of topics like Women and Youth.
Later, she became the vice-president of the Diputación Provincial de Alicante. This is a local government body. She also served as a deputy spokesperson starting in July 2007.
Becoming Mayor of Elche
Mercedes Alonso was a representative for Alicante in two important Spanish parliaments. These were the VI legislature of the Corts Valencianes and the IX legislature of the Cortes Generales.
In 2011, Mercedes Alonso made history. She became the first woman mayor of Elche. This was a big change for the city. Before her, the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party had governed Elche for 32 years in a row. She served as mayor until 2015.
