Mercedes Odina's Career
Starting in Journalism
Mercedes Odina studied Communication at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. She began her career working in radio, then joined Televisión Española (TVE), which is a big TV station in Spain. Soon after, she became part of the team for a well-known news program called Informe Semanal.
Directing Documentaries
In 1989, Mercedes started an amazing project: she wrote and directed a documentary series called Los años vividos (which means The Years We Lived). This series had ten parts and looked back at the entire 20th century in Spain. It featured interviews with 250 important Spanish people. This documentary series was so good that it won the Premios Ondas Internacional de Television award in 1992!
In 1991, she became the director of another TV show called Dossier 21. This show focused on investigative journalism, which means finding out important facts about current events and history. Some of her documentaries, like Objective: Kill Franco, were shown on TV channels in other countries and at international film festivals.
Working Abroad and Writing Books
In 1995, Mercedes Odina moved to New York City to work as a foreign correspondent for TVE. This meant she reported news from the United States back to Spain.
In 1997, she published her first book, America Sociedad Anonima. For several years, she also taught Communication at the University Ramon Llull in Barcelona. At the same time, she continued to write and work with different radio stations, TV channels, and newspapers.
In 2005, she took on a big role as the Head of Communication for Expo 2008. This was a huge international exhibition held in Spain. From 2008 to 2009, she was the Head of Culture at Canning House in London, which promotes connections between the UK and countries in Latin America.
