Mercyville, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Mercyville is a small, unincorporated community located in Macon County, Missouri. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's governed by the county.

The History of Mercyville

Mercyville was first established in the 1860s. It was named after Mercy Williams, who was the wife of a local blacksmith. A blacksmith is a person who makes and repairs things made of iron by hand.

In 1888, most of the people living in Mercyville moved away. They went to a nearby town called Elmer. This happened because the railroad tracks were extended to Elmer, making it a more important and connected place.

A post office, which is where mail is handled, was opened in Mercyville in 1867. It stayed open for many years but closed down in 1889, shortly after the railroad changed things for the community.
