Merete Skavlan (born July 25, 1920 – died November 2, 2018) was a talented Norwegian actress and theatre director. She was also a theatre instructor, helping others learn acting. Merete worked in many plays and helped create new theatre groups. She was a strong woman who even helped her country during World War II.

Early Life and Family

Merete Skavlan was born in Kristiania, Norway. This city is now known as Oslo. Her father, Einar Skavlan, was a newspaper editor and also a theatre director. Her mother, Margrethe Bartholdy, taught music. Merete's grandfather was Olaf Skavlan, a famous writer who studied literature.

Theatre Work During Wartime

During World War II, Norway was occupied. Merete Skavlan became involved in important resistance work. This meant she secretly helped her country. In 1943, she joined a secret group called the "Stanislavskij Group".

After the war ended, the members of this group started a new theatre called Studioteatret. Merete made her first appearance there in 1945. She acted in a play called The Long Christmas Dinner by Thornton Wilder. She continued to perform at Studioteatret until 1950.

Acting Career

Merete Skavlan had a long and busy acting career. After Studioteatret, she performed at several other important theatres.

  • From 1950 to 1952, she acted at Det Nye Teater.
  • From 1952 to 1959, she was at Folketeatret.
  • From 1959 to 1967, she performed at Oslo Nye Teater.

In the 1960s, Merete also acted for Fjernsynsteatret, which was a television theatre. She played many different roles there. For example, she was Angustias in The House of Bernarda Alba and Missis Smith in The Bald Soprano.

Becoming a Director

Merete Skavlan also became a theatre instructor and director. This meant she helped actors learn their parts and guided the entire play. She worked on productions at several theatres, including:

Her first time directing for television was in 1968. She adapted the novel The Scarlet Pimpernel for Fjernsynsteatret. In 1969, she directed her first stage play, Spring and Port Wine, for Det Norske Teatret. Merete also taught at the Norwegian National Academy of Theatre, sharing her knowledge with new actors.

Later Career

From 1984 to 1990, Merete Skavlan worked for the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK). She was the head of Radioteatret, which produced plays for radio. In 1991, she started her own theatre group called Intimteatret. She created this group with Gerhard Knoop.

Merete Skavlan also served on the board of the newspaper Dagbladet from 1960 to 1974. She passed away in November 2018, at the age of 98.
