The Merida brushfinch (Atlapetes meridae) is a type of bird that belongs to the Passerellidae family. This family is also known as the New World sparrows. This special bird is found only in northwestern Venezuela.

About the Merida Brushfinch

What is a Brushfinch?

The Merida brushfinch is a small bird. It is known for its bright colors and its habit of living in dense bushes and trees. These birds are often hard to spot because they like to stay hidden.

How Big Are They?

Adult Merida brushfinches weigh about 30 grams (1 ounce). They are usually between 17.5 to 18 centimeters (about 7 inches) long. That's about the length of a pencil!

What Do They Look Like?

Adult Merida brushfinches have an olive-colored back. Their belly is a bright lemon yellow. Their wings and tail are also olive.

Their head is quite striking! They have a chestnut-colored cap on top. A black "mask" covers their eyes. Below the mask, they have a white stripe that looks like a mustache. Their throat is a cheerful yellow.

Young Merida brushfinches look a bit duller. They are olive on top and dark yellow underneath. Their head pattern is similar to the adults, but the colors are not as bright.

Where Do They Live?

Their Home in Venezuela

The Merida brushfinch lives all year long in the Andes mountains. These mountains are in western Venezuela. You can find them in the Mérida and eastern Táchira regions.

What Kind of Forests Do They Like?

These birds prefer humid forests. They especially like "elfin" forests or forests with many oak trees. They love dense plants like ferns and bamboo. You can find them both inside these forests and along their edges.

They can also live in drier woodlands. These areas must also have thick plants. They are quite good at living in places that humans have changed a bit.

How High Do They Live?

Merida brushfinches usually live at high altitudes. They are found between 1,600 and 2,500 meters (about 5,250 to 8,200 feet) above sea level. Sometimes, they can be found as low as 1,000 meters (about 3,300 feet).

Their Daily Life and Food

What Do They Eat?

The Merida brushfinch mainly eats small insects and spiders. These are called arthropods. They also enjoy eating fruits and berries.

How Do They Find Food?

They usually look for food from the ground up to about 10 meters (33 feet) high. They search in shrubs and trees.

How Do They Behave?

These birds often travel and look for food in pairs. They also move around in family groups. Sometimes, they join other bird species in mixed flocks. Even though they like to stay hidden in thick plants, they seem okay with people watching them.

Reproduction and Life Cycle

Raising Young Birds

We don't know much about how Merida brushfinches raise their young. Scientists have not yet described their courtship. We also don't know what their nests look like or how they behave at the nest.

However, young birds have been seen. A juvenile bird was spotted in Perijá in August. Fledgling birds (young birds that have just learned to fly) were seen in Mérida in May and June.

Their Conservation Status

Are They in Danger?

The Merida brushfinch lives in a somewhat small area. But, it is quite common within that area. Its population seems to be stable, meaning it's not decreasing.

Also, these birds can live in places that have been changed by humans. Because of this, the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) considers them a species of "least concern." This means they are not currently at risk of extinction.
