Merrik Burrell facts for kids
Sir Merrik Burrell, 1st Baronet (born 5 November 1699 – died 6 April 1787) was an important British politician. He held a special title called a Baronet, which is a bit like a knight, but it can be passed down through families.
Merrik Burrell was the second son of Peter Burrell and Isabella Merrik. In 1744, he bought a large estate called West Grinstead Park.

Merrik Burrell's Political Career
Merrik Burrell spent many years serving in the British House of Commons. This is where elected representatives, called Members of Parliament (MPs), meet to make laws for the country.
Serving as a Member of Parliament
Burrell first became an MP for a place called Great Marlow in 1747. He represented them until 1754. After that, he was elected for Grampound, and he served that area until 1768.
Later, in 1774, he was elected to represent Haslemere. He then became the MP for Great Bedwyn and continued in that role until 1784.
Governor of the Bank of England
Besides being an MP, Merrik Burrell also had a very important job at the Bank of England. He was the Governor of the Bank of England from 1758 to 1760. The Governor is like the boss of the bank, helping to manage the country's money and economy.
Becoming a Baronet
On 15 July 1766, Merrik Burrell was given the title of a Baronet. This special title was connected to his home, West Grinstead Park in Sussex.
Later Life and Legacy
Merrik Burrell never married and did not have any children. He passed away in 1787. After his death, his Baronet title was passed on to his nephew's son, Peter. Peter later received another important title, becoming Baron Gwydyr.
