The End of Merrymount

The conflict between Merrymount and the Puritans grew over time. The Puritan leaders, especially those from Plymouth Colony, did not approve of Merrymount's activities. They also worried about Merrymount's trade with Native American tribes, particularly the fur trade.

In 1628, Miles Standish, a military leader from Plymouth Colony, led a group to Merrymount. They arrested Thomas Morton. Morton was sent back to England. After this, the settlement of Merrymount was largely broken up. The Maypole was cut down, and the unique way of life at Merrymount came to an end.

Today, the area where Merrymount once stood is a neighborhood in Quincy, Massachusetts. It is still called Merrymount.
