The Story of Merthyr
The name Merthyr comes from a large house called Merthyr. This house belonged to Samuel Griffith, who was a very important person in Queensland's history. He was a Queensland Premier, which is like being the leader of the state government. His house was on Llewellyn Street and had a great view of the Brisbane River.
Samuel Griffith named his house after his hometown. He was born in a place called Merthyr Tydfil in Wales. He passed away in 1920. Later, in 1929, the land where the Merthyr house stood was divided into smaller blocks to build more homes. The original house was taken down in 1963 because it was too expensive to keep up.
