The Life of Mervyn Wilson
Early Years and Education
Mervyn Wilson was born in East Belfast, a city in Northern Ireland, on 21 June 1922. He attended Everton Elementary School and then Sullivan Upper School. After his early schooling, he continued his studies at the University of Bristol in England. He also received special training at Tyndale Hall in Bristol to become a priest.
Serving the Church in Ireland
Mervyn Wilson began his journey as a church leader when he became a deacon in 1952 and then a priest in 1953. Over many years, he held various important positions within the Anglican Church in Ireland.
He started as a curate, which is like an assistant priest, in several places:
- Ballymacarrett (1952–1956)
- Donaghcloney (1956–1959)
- Newtownards (1959–1961)
Later, he became a Rector, which means he was the main priest in charge of a church area. He served as Rector in:
- Ballyphilip with Ardquin (1961–1970)
- St Patrick's, Newry (1970–1992)
Mervyn Wilson also took on wider leadership roles. He was a Rural Dean for the areas of Kilbroney and Newry and Mourne from 1977 to 1990. A Rural Dean helps oversee several churches in a specific region.
