Early Life and Education
Mervyn Wilson was born in 1922 in East Belfast, a city in Northern Ireland. He went to Everton Elementary School and then Sullivan Upper School. After finishing school, he continued his education at the University of Bristol in England.
Becoming a Priest
After his university studies, Mervyn Wilson trained to become a priest at Tyndale Hall, also in Bristol. This training prepared him for a life of serving the church. He officially became a deacon in 1952 and then a priest in 1953.
Serving the Church
Mervyn Wilson spent many years serving different communities as a priest. He started as a curate, which is a junior priest, in places like Ballymacarrett (from 1952 to 1956), Donaghcloney (from 1956 to 1959), and Newtownards (from 1959 to 1961).
Later, he became a Rector, which is the main priest in charge of a parish. He served in Ballyphilip with Ardquin from 1961 to 1970. He then moved to St Philip's in Newry, where he served from 1970 to 1992.
He also held other important roles. He was a Rural Dean for Kilbroney and Newry and Mourne from 1977 to 1990. He became a Prebendary of Dromore Cathedral from 1983 to 1985. From 1985 to 1989, he was a Canon of Belfast Cathedral. Finally, he was appointed the Dean of Dromore, a very senior position, from 1990 to 1992.
Later Years
Mervyn Robert Wilson passed away in 2022. He lived a long life, reaching the age of 100.
