Her Journey in Education
Mi Lu earned her advanced degrees, a Master's (MS) and a PhD, in electrical engineering from Rice University in Houston. She finished her Master's in 1984 and her PhD in 1987. Right after that, she joined the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Texas A&M University. She started as an assistant professor in 1987. She became an associate professor in 1993 and a full professor in 1998, where she has been teaching and researching ever since.
What She Does
Professor Lu is very active in the world of computer science. She often helps organize big meetings and conferences where experts share new ideas. For example, she was the main person in charge of the program for the International Conference on Foundations Computer Science and Software Engineering in 2021. She also led the International Conference on Computer Science and Informatics multiple times in the early 2000s. In 2017, she was the general chair for the International Conference on Control Engineering and Mechanical Design.
She also helps guide what gets published in important science magazines, like the ones from the IEEE. She has been a guest editor and served on the review panel for the National Science Foundation, which helps decide which research projects get funding. Professor Lu has also guided more than 50 students and researchers who were working on their PhDs, Master's degrees, or post-doctoral studies.

Mi Lu has received many honors for her work. She was chosen for "Who's Who of Professional Women," which lists important women in their fields. She has also been recognized in several "Who's Who" books, including "Who's Who in America," "Who's Who in the World," and "Who's Who in Science and Engineering." In 2019, she won the Innovative Paper Award at the CSCI conference for her new ideas. She was also named a Webb Faculty Fellow at Texas A&M University's Dwight Look College of Engineering for 2002-2003, which is a special honor for professors.
