Life of Michael Angelo Hayes

Michael Angelo Hayes was born in Waterford, Ireland, on July 25, 1820. His father, Edward Hayes, was also a talented artist who painted portraits and small pictures.

He quickly became known for his paintings of soldiers and horses. Some of his famous works include The Race for the Corinthian Cup at Punchestown and Charge of the 3rd Light Dragoons at Moodkee. He also painted large events, such as The Installation of the Prince of Wales as a Knight of St. Patrick in St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin.

In 1854, Michael Angelo Hayes became a member of the Royal Hibernian Academy. In 1856, he was chosen to be the secretary of the academy. Even though there was a disagreement within the academy, Hayes kept his role as secretary. He also wrote a booklet in 1857 to explain his position.

Hayes was also chosen as a member of the New Society of Water-colours in London. He regularly showed his paintings at their exhibitions. He was well-respected in Dublin and even served as the Dublin City Marshal, a public official role.

Sadly, Michael Angelo Hayes died in an accident at his home in Dublin on December 31, 1877. He fell into a tank on the roof of his house.

One of his pictures, Sackville Street, Dublin, Twenty-five Years Ago, was shown at an exhibition in London in 1888. Another painting, Wayside Country, was made into an engraving by the National Art Union.
