Michael Barrantes Rojas was born on October 4, 1983. He is a professional footballer from Costa Rica. He plays as a midfielder for Santa Ana.
In November 2011, Michael scored two goals for Aalesund in the 2011 Norwegian Cup Final. His team won 2–1 against Brann. He was named the best player of that match. He also won the Kniksen award as the best midfielder in the 2011 Tippeligaen league.

Playing for Clubs
Starting in Costa Rica
Michael Barrantes began his professional football journey with A.D. Belén in 2003. He then played for Puntarenas F.C. for two seasons. In 2007, he joined the Costa Rican team Deportivo Saprissa.
He helped Saprissa win the 2008 league title. He scored the winning goal in the final playoff match against LD Alajuelense. In May 2009, he had a left knee injury that kept him from playing for eight weeks.
Time in Norway with Aalesunds FK
In July 2010, Michael joined the Norwegian team Aalesunds FK on loan. He played alongside his countryman Pablo Herrera. After some paperwork issues, Michael quickly became a favorite with his new team.
He made his first start for Aalesunds on September 12, 2010. The next season, Michael became a key player in Aalesunds' midfield. The club decided to sign him permanently, making his loan move into a full transfer.
In 2011, Michael's skills were praised by many. He helped his team win 3–2 against IK Start and 2–0 against Viking FK. He was named the best player in four straight matches for Aalesunds. The local newspaper even called him the King of the midfield.
Michael helped Aalesunds reach the Europa League qualifiers. He also led his team to win the domestic cup in 2011. Aalesunds beat SK Brann 2–1 in the final, with Michael scoring both goals. At the end of the season, he was named "Midfielder of the Year." This was a big achievement, even though he did not speak Norwegian or English.
In 2012, Michael stayed with Aalesunds. On May 13, he was made captain for the first time in a 3–1 win. He scored against SK Brann again in a 2–0 home win. He also scored two goals in a home game against Fredrikstad FK on July 15. He repeated this feat a month later with an amazing goal from 30 meters away. Later, the club shared that Michael had been playing with a pelvic injury for much of 2012.
Playing in China
In June 2015, Michael signed with Shanghai Shenxin in China. On January 15, 2016, he moved to another Chinese team, Wuhan Zall.
Return to Costa Rica
After his time in China, Michael returned to Costa Rica. He played for Cartaginés and Grecia. In 2017, he rejoined Saprissa. He played for Saprissa until 2021.
After Saprissa, he played for Cartaginés again from 2022 to 2023. He then joined Alajuelense in 2023 and Puntarenas in 2024. As of 2025, he plays for Santa Ana.
Playing for Costa Rica
Michael Barrantes first played for the Costa Rica in February 2007. This was a friendly match against Trinidad and Tobago. He played in 54 international matches and scored four goals for his country. He also played in fourteen FIFA World Cup qualification matches. Michael represented Costa Rica in the 2007 UNCAF Nations Cup and the 2007 and 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup tournaments.
Michael's Family Life
Michael Barrantes lives with his wife, Andrea. In August 2012, they shared that they were going to have their first child. Their son, Arjen, was born in February 2013. He was named after the famous Dutch footballer Arjen Robben.
