Michael Brokoff facts for kids
Michael Johann Joseph Brokoff (born April 28, 1686 – died September 8, 1721) was a talented Czech sculptor. He lived during the exciting Baroque period. Michael worked mostly with sandstone to create his amazing art.
Life of a Sculptor
Michael Brokoff was born in Klášterec nad Ohří. He was the oldest son of Jan Brokoff, who was also a sculptor. Michael started learning his craft in his father's workshop. This is called "apprenticing."
He continued his training with other skilled artists. These included Filip Ondřej Quitainer and possibly Jan Oldřich Mayer. They were famous sculptors and carvers of their time.
In 1718, Michael took over his father's workshop. This happened after his father passed away. He managed it for a short time.
Family of Artists
People say Michael's work was technically better than his father's. However, he never reached the amazing style of his younger brother, Ferdinand Brokoff. Michael later passed the family workshop to Ferdinand. The Brokoff family was truly a family of artists!
Michael's Art Style
Michael Brokoff's sculptures are known for their unique look. The feelings in his statues are shown mostly through the faces. The body movements in his art can sometimes seem a bit stiff. His work is often described as "less demanding" than his brother's.
