Michael Colbert's Political Journey
Michael Colbert was an important figure in Irish politics. He served in both Dáil Éireann and Seanad Éireann. These are the two parts of the Irish parliament.
Serving in Dáil Éireann
Michael Colbert was first elected to Dáil Éireann in 1937. He represented the Limerick area. In Dáil Éireann, members are called Teachta Dála (TDs). This is like being a Member of Parliament in other countries.
He lost his seat in the 1938 election. However, he was re-elected to Dáil Éireann in 1944. He lost his seat again in the 1948 election.
Later Elections as a TD
Michael Colbert returned to Dáil Éireann in 1955. He won a special election for the Limerick West area. This election happened because the previous TD, David Madden, had passed away. Michael Colbert served until the 1957 general election, when he lost his seat for the last time.
Serving in Seanad Éireann
After losing his Dáil seat in 1938, Michael Colbert was elected to Seanad Éireann. This is the upper house of the Irish parliament. He was elected through the Agricultural Panel, which represents people involved in farming.
He was re-elected to the Seanad in 1943. He served there until 1944, when he regained his seat in Dáil Éireann.
