Michael D'Arcy's Political Journey
Michael D'Arcy's career in politics started in 1958. His father, Timothy, had passed away. Michael took over his father's seat on the local county council. He served on this council for fifteen years.
Serving in Dáil Éireann
In 1977, Michael D'Arcy was first elected to Dáil Éireann. This is the main parliament of Ireland. He won his seat in the 1977 general election. He kept this seat until the 1987 general election. At that time, he lost his seat to another politician, Brendan Howlin.
He was elected to the Dáil again in 1989. However, he lost his seat once more in the 1992 election. After this, he became a Senator. Senators are also part of the Irish parliament, but in a different house. He served in the 20th Seanad.
Michael D'Arcy returned to the Dáil in the 1997 general election. He served in the 28th Dáil. He lost his seat for the last time in the 2002 general election.
Working as a Minister
In 1981, Michael D'Arcy was given an important role. He became a Minister of State for Agriculture. A Minister of State helps a main government minister. This was part of Garret FitzGerald's first government.
In 1982, he became a Minister of State for Fisheries and Forestry. He also worked at the Department of the Gaeltacht. He held these roles until February 1986.
Local Government and Family Life
Beyond national politics, Michael D'Arcy also served his local community. In 1999, he was elected to the Gorey Town Council. He was re-elected in 2004. He retired from the council in 2009.
Michael D'Arcy was married to Marie. They had four children together. One of their sons, Michael W. D'Arcy, also became a TD and a Senator, following in his father's footsteps.
Michael D'Arcy passed away on May 1, 2024, at the age of 90.
