Michael Dexter (born May 15, 1945) is a British scientist. He is known for his important work studying blood and blood diseases. He was also the director of the Wellcome Trust, a big charity that supports health research.

Becoming a Scientist: Michael Dexter's Education

Michael Dexter was very determined to learn. He studied for his high school exams (called A levels) at night school. After that, he went to the University of Salford. There, he studied physiology, which is about how living things work, and zoology, the study of animals.

After getting his first degree, he continued his studies. He earned a PhD from the University of Manchester in 1974. His research focused on Leukemia, a type of cancer that affects blood cells. Later, in 1982, he received another special degree called a Doctor of Science from the University of Salford.

Michael Dexter's Career in Research

Michael Dexter spent many years working as a scientist and professor. He was a visiting researcher at the Memorial Sloan–Kettering Cancer Center in the United States. From 1985 to 1998, he was a professor of haematology (the study of blood) at the University of Manchester.

He also led important research centers. He was the director of the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research. Later, he became the director of the Wellcome Trust. This organization helps fund many scientific discoveries around the world. Michael Dexter has written over 360 articles for science magazines, including the famous Nature. He has also helped edit four books about science.

Awards and Special Recognitions

In 1991, Michael Dexter was given a very special honor. He was chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS). This is a big award for scientists in the United Kingdom, showing that they have made major contributions to science.
