Michael E. Haynes (May 9, 1927 – September 12, 2019) was an important American minister and politician. He was from the state of Massachusetts. He went to Shelton State Community College. In 1949, he earned his bachelor's degree from New England School of Theology.
Haynes served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1965 to 1968. He represented the Roxbury area of Boston. He was also part of the Boston Mayor's Committee on Violence. He was a pastor at Twelfth Baptist Church in Roxbury for many years. He led the church from 1964 to 2004.

Civil Rights Work
During the 1960s and 1970s, Michael Haynes was very active in the civil rights movement. This movement worked for equal rights for all people.
Helping Martin Luther King Jr.
In 1965, Haynes helped plan Martin Luther King Jr.'s visit to Boston. Dr. King came to speak on Boston Common that spring. His main speech on April 23 was about school desegregation in Boston. This meant ending the separation of students by race in schools.
Honoring Michael Haynes
A school in Roxbury was named after him. It is called the Haynes Early Education school. This honors his work and dedication to the community.
Lower Roxbury History Project
In 2006, Reverend Michael E. Haynes had an idea. He suggested that Northeastern University create a history project. This project would focus on the African American community in Lower Roxbury.
As a result, the university started the Lower Roxbury Black History Project. This project helps to record and share the history of the community.

Michael Haynes had an older brother. His brother is Roy Haynes, a famous jazz drummer.
Michael Haynes passed away on September 12, 2019.
