Bishop Michael Fu Tieshan (Simplified Chinese: 傅铁山, Traditional Chinese: 傅鐵山; November 3, 1931 – April 20, 2007) was an important leader in the Catholic Church in China. He served as a bishop in Beijing and was a top leader of the Catholic Patriotic Association.

Life and Work

Early Life and Priesthood

Fu Tieshan was born on November 3, 1931. His birthplace was Qingyuan County in Hebei province, China. He chose to become a priest and served in the church for many years.

Becoming a Bishop

In 1979, Fu Tieshan was made a bishop by authorities in Beijing. Usually, Catholic bishops are appointed directly by the Pope, who is the leader of the worldwide Catholic Church.

Leadership Roles

Bishop Fu Tieshan held several important positions. In 1998, he became the chairman of the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association. This association is a group for Catholics in China that is recognized by the government.

He also served as the acting president of the Bishops' Conference of the Catholic Church in China. This group represents bishops in China who work with the government.

In 2003, he was named a vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress. This is China's main law-making body, similar to a parliament in other countries.

Later Years and Passing

Bishop Fu Tieshan passed away on April 20, 2007. He died in Beijing Hospital due to lung cancer. His death was announced by the Xinhua news agency in Beijing.

Anthony Liu Bainian, who was the vice chairman of the Patriotic Association, shared a thought about Bishop Fu. He told a news agency that Bishop Fu wished to "see his priests" whom he had not met for a long time because of his illness.

After Bishop Fu Tieshan passed away, Joseph Li Shan became his successor.
