His paintings have also been seen in New York City and California.
About Michael Goldberg
Michael Goldberg served in World War II. He was one of the last artists from the group known as the New York School. This group included many important modern artists. He started showing his "action paintings" in New York in the early 1950s.
Goldberg began studying art at age 14. He took classes at the Art Students League of New York. In the 1950s, he learned painting from Hans Hofmann. He also talked about art with famous painters. These included Willem de Kooning, Lee Krasner, and Jackson Pollock. They often met at places like The Eighth Street Club or the Cedar Bar.
His Art and Career
Goldberg started showing his paintings in New York in the early 1950s. Other abstract expressionist artists at that time included Joan Mitchell and Helen Frankenthaler.
He became well-known in the late 1950s and early 1960s. This was when new art styles like Pop Art were becoming popular. For a while, his work was not as recognized. But by the 1970s and 1980s, people began to appreciate his art more. He had a long and successful career as an abstract painter.
Goldberg's art, like that of other abstract expressionists, often mixed Western ideas with Eastern philosophy. He continued to teach, paint, and show his work throughout his life. He taught popular classes at the School of Visual Arts. He lived with his wife, artist Lynn Umlauf. Michael Goldberg passed away in Manhattan from a heart attack.
