Michael Crumpton's Early Life and Schooling

Michael Joseph Crumpton was born in England on June 7, 1929. His parents were Charles and Edith Crumpton. He went to Poole Grammar School in Poole, Dorset. Later, he studied at University College Southampton, which is now Southampton University. He earned a science degree (BSc) from the University of London. He then worked at the Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine and earned his PhD, also from London University.

From 1953 to 1955, he completed his National Service. He served with the Royal Army Medical Corps.

Michael Crumpton's Scientific Career

From 1955 to 1960, Michael Crumpton worked as a scientist. He was at the Microbiological Research Establishment. This place is now part of the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory at Porton Down.

From 1960 to 1966, he was a research fellow. He worked in the Immunology Department at St Mary's Hospital Medical School. This school was part of London University and is now part of Imperial College.

Crumpton then joined the scientific team at the National Institute for Medical Research in London. He became the head of the Biochemistry Division from 1976 to 1979. After that, he led the Cell Board from 1979 to 1983. This Institute later moved to the new Francis Crick Institute in London in 2016.

He also worked with Imperial Cancer Research Technology Ltd. This company was part of the Imperial Cancer Research Fund. He was a non-executive Director from 1989 to 1999. He also served as Chief Operating Officer from 1993 to 1994.

Crumpton was a member and later chairman of a special committee. This committee was for the World Health Organization (WHO). It focused on Polysaccharide encapsulated bacteria from 1984 to 1991. He also served on many other science and medical committees. These committees were in England, Canada, and the United States.

In 2004, Crumpton gave an important speech. It was called the Bernal Lecture. The topic was: "Are low-frequency environmental fields a health hazard?"

Michael Crumpton's Personal Life

In 1960, Michael Crumpton married Janet Elizabeth Dean. They have one son and two daughters.

In 1979, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS). This is a very high honor for scientists. In 1991, he was appointed a CBE.
