Michael Schlow (born around 1964 in Brooklyn) is a famous chef and restaurant owner based in Boston. He owns several popular restaurants, including Via Matta, Radius, and Tico. He also has six restaurants in the Washington, D.C. area. Michael even appeared on the TV show Top Chef Masters!

Michael was born in Brooklyn and spent his childhood in Somerville, New Jersey. He finished high school there.

Becoming a Chef

Michael loved baseball and even had a scholarship to play in college! But he decided to follow his passion for cooking instead. He went to the Academy of Culinary Arts at Atlantic Cape Community College in New Jersey to learn how to become a chef.

He started his cooking journey in New York City and then on Long Island. In 1995, he moved to Boston to cook at a restaurant called Café Louis.

Awards and Special Recognitions

Michael Schlow and his restaurants have won many important awards:

  • He won the prestigious James Beard Foundation Award for "Best Chef, Northeast" in 2000. This award is like an Oscar for chefs!
  • His restaurant, Radius, was named "Best New Restaurant" by Food & Wine magazine. It was also called "Best Restaurant" and "Best Power Lunch" by Boston Magazine. Gourmet Magazine even listed it as one of the "25 Best American Restaurants."
  • Via Matta, another one of his restaurants, was named one of "America's Best Restaurants" by Gourmet Magazine. Esquire magazine also called it one of the "Best New Restaurants in America."
  • In 2003, his restaurant Great Bay opened. That same year, Boston Magazine voted it the "Best Seafood Restaurant in Boston." Michael was the main chef and a co-owner there.
