Michael Shaara (born June 23, 1928 – died May 5, 1988) was an American writer. He wrote exciting stories about science fiction, sports, and history. He is best known for his book The Killer Angels. This book won a special award called the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1975.
Michael Shaara was born in Jersey City, New Jersey. His family came from Italy. He went to Rutgers University and graduated in 1951. Before becoming a full-time writer, he served in the 82nd Airborne Division. He was also an amateur boxer and a police officer.
Later, Michael Shaara taught literature at Florida State University. He continued to write many stories and novels. His most famous book, The Killer Angels, tells the story of the Battle of Gettysburg. This book won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1975.
Michael Shaara passed away in 1988 when he was 59 years old. His children, Jeffrey and Lila, also became writers. In 1997, Jeffrey Shaara created the annual Michael Shaara Award for Excellence in Civil War Fiction. This award is given to new writers who write great stories about the American Civil War.
