Michael Curtis "Yogi" Stewart (born April 24, 1975) is a retired American basketball player. He was born in France. He played as a power forward and center in the NBA, which is the top basketball league in North America. His last team was the Atlanta Hawks.
Early Life and Nickname
Michael Stewart was born in Cucq, France. This was on April 24, 1975. His dad, Mike Stewart, was also a basketball player. His father played professionally in Europe. Michael went to Kennedy High School in Sacramento, California. He was a star player there. He helped his team win two city championships in 1990 and 1991. Michael got his nickname "Yogi" from his older brother. He loved watching Yogi Bear cartoons when he was a kid!
College Basketball Career
After high school, Michael played basketball for four years. He played at the University of California, Berkeley. He was very good at blocking shots. He became the school's all-time leader in blocked shots. He had 207 blocks during his college career. Michael set a new school record. He blocked 59 shots in his first year (1993-1994). He was a very reliable player. He played in every single game during his college career. This was a total of 117 games.
Playing in the NBA
Michael Stewart was not chosen in the 1997 NBA draft. However, he still got a chance to play in the NBA. The Sacramento Kings signed him to a contract in 1997. This was a dream come true for Michael. He had been a ball boy for the Kings when he was younger. In his first year (1997–98), he led the Kings in blocked shots. He was also second among all NBA rookies in blocks. He even blocked nine shots in one game!
In 1999, Michael joined the Toronto Raptors. He signed a big contract with them later that year. In 2002, he was traded from the Raptors. He went to the Cleveland Cavaliers. After that, he played for the Boston Celtics in 2003. His last team in the NBA was the Atlanta Hawks in 2004.
