Michael Walsh was an important politician from New York. He served as a member of the U.S. Congress from 1853 to 1855. He was born in Ireland and later moved to the United States, where he became involved in publishing and state politics.

Early Life in America

Michael Walsh was born in Youghal, a town in County Cork, Ireland, in 1810. He went to college at Trinity College, Dublin. After finishing his studies, he moved to the United States. He first settled in Baltimore, Maryland.

Later, he moved to New York City. There, he learned how to do lithographic printing, which is a way of printing using a special stone or metal plate. While living in New York City, he also started a group called the Bowery Boys.

His Career in Politics

In 1843, Michael Walsh started his own newspaper called the Subterranean. He published it for two years. However, he had to stop publishing it because of legal issues related to what he wrote.

Walsh was also a member of the New York State Assembly. This is a group of lawmakers who help create laws for New York State. He served in the Assembly in 1847, 1848, and again in 1852.

In 1853, Michael Walsh was elected to the 33rd United States Congress. He was a member of the Democratic Party. As a U.S. Representative, he worked in Washington D.C. to represent the people of New York. His term in Congress lasted from March 4, 1853, to March 3, 1855.

After his time in Congress, he tried to be re-elected in 1854 but was not successful. He then worked as a newspaper reporter. Michael Walsh passed away in New York City in 1859. He was buried in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn.
