Micheal Ferland (born April 20, 1992) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. He played as a winger for teams like the Vancouver Canucks, Calgary Flames, and Carolina Hurricanes. The Flames picked him in the fifth round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

Early Life and Hockey Dreams

Micheal Ferland was born on April 20, 1992, in Swan River, Manitoba, Canada. He grew up with an older sister and a younger brother. His mother, Dianne, worked hard to support the family.

Micheal started playing house league hockey when he was 8 years old. He played until he was 15. Then, the midget AAA Brandon Wheat Kings noticed his talent. He tried out for their team and earned a spot. It was tough for his mom to pay for hockey. Charities like KidSport and the Manitoba Métis Federation helped with equipment costs. When Micheal joined the midget Wheat Kings, parents of his teammates from Swan River even helped pay his fees.

Playing Career Highlights

Ferland started his professional career in 2012. The Flames sent him to their minor league team, the Abbotsford Heat, in the American Hockey League (AHL). He had a tough start and was later sent to the Utah Grizzlies in the ECHL. After that, he returned to the Brandon Wheat Kings. He was then traded to the Saskatoon Blades. Despite challenges, he helped the Blades win 18 games in a row. They also played in the 2013 Memorial Cup.

Calgary Flames Era

The Flames helped Ferland improve his game. He returned to the Abbotsford Heat for the 2013–14 season. He was much lighter and played well, scoring 18 points in 25 games. However, a knee injury ended his season early.

  • For the 2014–15 season, Ferland impressed the Flames coaches.
  • He started with the Adirondack Flames, their new AHL team.
  • On October 30, 2014, he was called up to the Calgary Flames.
  • He made his NHL debut the next night against the Nashville Predators.
  • Ferland got his first NHL point on November 22, 2014, an assist against the New Jersey Devils.
  • He scored his first NHL goal on March 29, 2015, against the Nashville Predators. It was the winning goal in a 5–2 victory.

In his first NHL season, Ferland had 2 goals and 5 points in 26 games. During the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs, his physical style of play made him a fan favorite. In a key playoff game against the Vancouver Canucks, Ferland helped the Flames come back from a 3–0 deficit. He scored a goal and then an empty-net goal, helping his team win 7–4 and eliminate Vancouver. His strong performance earned him a new two-year contract with the Flames.

Carolina Hurricanes Chapter

On June 23, 2018, Ferland was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes. He joined the team along with Dougie Hamilton and Adam Fox. In the 2018–19 season, Ferland quickly fit in with the Hurricanes.

As a free agent, Ferland signed a four-year contract with the Vancouver Canucks on July 10, 2019. His time with the Canucks was unfortunately affected by concussion problems.

  • He played only 14 games in his first season with Vancouver.
  • He had to leave games multiple times due to recurring symptoms.
  • After missing the entire 2020–21 season due to ongoing concussion issues, Ferland indicated he would not play professionally again.
