Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Michel Maxwell Philip (born October 12, 1829 – died June 30, 1888) was an important figure from Trinidad. He was a talented novelist, a skilled lawyer, and worked for the government as a civil servant. He is remembered for writing the first novel from Trinidad and for breaking barriers in politics.

Early Life and Education

Michel Maxwell Philip was born in Trinidad, at the Cooper Grange Estate in South Naparima. He was a bright young man who started his education at a small school in San Fernando.

When he was 14, he traveled to Scotland to attend St Mary's Catholic College. There, he received a classical education, which means he studied subjects like Latin, Greek, and philosophy. This strong education helped shape his future career.

Becoming a Lawyer and Author

After finishing his studies in Scotland, Philip returned to Trinidad in 1849. He spent two years studying law there before going back to England. In 1854, he officially became a lawyer, which is called being "called to the bar."

In the same year, 1854, he published his novel titled Emmanuel Appadocca, or, Blighted Life: A Tale of the Boucaneers. This book made history because it was the very first novel written by a Trinidadian author! The story is about a young man who faces challenges because of his birth. He works hard to prove himself and show that he is smarter and more ethical than those who look down on him. The famous writer C. L. R. James once said that Philip was "the most brilliant native of his time."

A Leader in Government

Michel Maxwell Philip also had a significant career in public service. From 1866 to 1870, A. H. Gordon was the governor of Trinidad. Governor Gordon recognized Philip's talents and appointed him to the Legislative Council. This council helped make laws for the country.

Later, Governor Gordon appointed Philip as the acting Solicitor-General. This is a very important legal position, advising the government on legal matters. In 1871, Philip officially became the Solicitor-General and held this high-ranking job until he passed away in 1888.

Breaking Barriers as Mayor

In 1867, Michel Maxwell Philip achieved another historic milestone. He was elected as the Mayor of Port of Spain, the capital city of Trinidad. This was a huge step forward because, before him, only white individuals had held this position.

Historian Bridget Brereton noted that Philip becoming mayor "perhaps marks the emergence of the coloured man as a political force in Trinidad." This means his election showed that people of mixed race were starting to gain power and influence in the country's politics.

Later Life and Legacy

Michel Maxwell Philip's health began to decline in 1887, and he passed away in 1888 in Maraval.

To honor his contributions, the Port of Spain City Corporation declared November 29 as Maxwell Philip Day. This special day was first celebrated in 1999. On that day, an important collection of essays about Philip's life and work was introduced, edited by Selwyn Cudjoe. Michel Maxwell Philip's life showed that talent and determination can overcome challenges and lead to great achievements.
