Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Michigan Aeronautical Research Center (MARC) was an important place in America for studying airplanes and rockets. It was part of the University of Michigan and located at Willow Run Airport. MARC helped create new technologies for air travel and defense.

What Was MARC?

The Michigan Aeronautical Research Center, or MARC, was a special group that focused on air research. They worked on understanding how planes fly and how to make them better. This center was known as one of America's top places for air-related science. It was run by experts from the University of Michigan.

How It Started

MARC was first created in 1946. Just a few years later, in 1950, its research work grew much bigger. Because of this, its name was changed to the Willow Run Research Center. This new name showed that the center was doing even more important studies.

Later on, in 1972, the Willow Run Research Center became its own separate organization. It left the University of Michigan and was renamed the Environmental Research Institute of Michigan. This new institute continued to do important scientific work.

Important Research

The scientists at Willow Run did many interesting projects. One of their big achievements was helping to create the Bomarc Missile Program. They worked together with a large company called Boeing on this important defense project.

In 1953, the researchers at Willow Run were busy testing new ideas for rockets. They worked on "throttlable rocket motors," which are engines that can change how much power they produce. They also tested "hypergolic propellants," which are special fuels that ignite instantly when mixed. This kind of research helped make rockets safer and more powerful.
