The Michigan Department of History, Arts and Libraries (MHAL) was a special government group in the U.S. state of Michigan. Its official name was Michigan History, Arts and Libraries. This department was created in 2001 and stopped existing in 2009.
What MHAL Did
The Michigan Department of History, Arts and Libraries was formed in October 2001. It was created by Governor John Engler to bring together several important state groups. Think of it like combining different clubs into one big club.
Bringing Groups Together
This new department combined several existing groups. These groups had been working on history and culture for a long time. For example, some of their work started way back in 1874.
The main groups that became part of MHAL were:
- The Library of Michigan
- The Mackinac State Historic Parks
- The Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs
- The Michigan Historical Center
Places and Programs
The department helped run many cool places and programs in Michigan. These were great for learning and for tourists visiting the state.
Some of the places and programs MHAL managed included:
- Fort Mackinac
- Fort Michilimackinac
- The Library of Michigan
- The Michigan Historical Center
- The Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary
MHAL also published a magazine called Michigan History. This magazine shared interesting stories about Michigan's past.
When MHAL Ended
The Michigan Department of History, Arts and Libraries stopped operating in July 2009. This decision was made by Governor Jennifer Granholm. Its responsibilities were then moved to other parts of the state government.
