Michio Ashikaga (足利 道夫, Ashikaga Michio, born May 22, 1950) is a former Japanese football player. He was a talented Midfielder who played for the Japan national team.
Michio Ashikaga: A Football Journey
Michio Ashikaga was born in Akita Prefecture, Japan, on May 22, 1950. He grew up loving football and became a professional player. He was known for his skills as a midfielder, a player who helps both attack and defense on the field.
Playing for Clubs
After finishing high school, Michio Ashikaga joined the Mitsubishi Motors football club in 1969. This was a big step in his career. He played for them for ten years until 1978.
During his time with Mitsubishi Motors, the team was very successful. They won the Japan Soccer League championship three times: in 1969, 1973, and 1978. They also won the Emperor's Cup, another important tournament, in 1971, 1973, and 1978. In 1978, they also won the JSL Cup.
Michio Ashikaga played in 132 league games for Mitsubishi Motors. He scored 36 goals, which is a great achievement for a midfielder. He retired from playing club football in 1978.
Playing for Japan
Michio Ashikaga also represented his country. In September 1971, he was chosen to play for the Japan national football team. This was for the qualification games for the 1972 Summer Olympics.
He made his first appearance for Japan on September 23, 1971, in a match against Malaysia. He also played in the qualification games for the 1974 FIFA World Cup.
Between 1971 and 1975, Michio Ashikaga played a total of 7 games for the Japan national team. He was an important part of the team during those years.
