Mickie Laree James (born August 31, 1979) is an American country singer and professional wrestler. She is currently working for Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) as a Creative Director and Head of Female Talent. She is well-known for her time in major wrestling companies like WWE, Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA), and National Wrestling Alliance (NWA).
Mickie James started her wrestling journey in 1999, using the name Alexis Laree. She trained hard to improve her skills. In 2002, she joined NWA: Total Nonstop Action (now called Total Nonstop Action Wrestling again). There, she became part of a wrestling group called The Gathering. She even competed in special matches called Clockwork Orange House of Fun matches.
In 2005, Mickie James joined World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). She had a big storyline with Trish Stratus, where she played a huge fan. Mickie won her first WWE Women's Championship at WrestleMania 22. She held this title five times! She also won the WWE Divas Championship in 2009. This made her one of the few women to hold both major WWE titles.
After leaving WWE in 2010, she returned to TNA and won the TNA Knockouts Champion three times. She came back to WWE in 2016 for a few years. Later, in 2021, Mickie returned to Impact Wrestling (another name for TNA). She won the Knockouts Championship two more times, making her an 11-time women's world champion across WWE and Impact.

Early Life and Interests
Mickie James was born in Richmond, Virginia. She grew up in Montpelier, Virginia. She loved spending time on her grandmother's horse farm. This led to her strong interest in equestrian sports (horse riding). She also played the violin for five years. Mickie James is also part Native American, from the Powhatan tribe.
Professional Wrestling Career
Starting Out (1999–2003)
Mickie James was a big fan of professional wrestling from a young age. A friend suggested she try a wrestling school. She made her wrestling debut on August 28, 1999. She started as a manager for KYDA Pro Wrestling, using the name Alexis Laree. She helped male wrestlers, and even managed Tommy Dreamer to win a championship.
In March, she had her first match, a tag team match with both male and female wrestlers. She trained at special camps, including one run by Dory Funk Jr.. She also trained at Maryland Championship Wrestling (MCW). In 2002, she also started appearing for Ring of Honor.
Time in Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (2002–2003)
While wrestling in Ring of Honor, Mickie James also joined Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA) in 2002. She was part of a group called The Gathering, led by Raven. On April 16, she became the first woman to compete in a special match called a Clockwork Orange House of Fun match. She continued to wrestle with The Gathering before leaving the company.
World Wrestling Entertainment
Training in Ohio Valley Wrestling (2003–2005)
After trying for two years, Mickie James signed a contract with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) in August 2003. They sent her to train at Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW), which was their training school. She still used the name Alexis Laree. She appeared on OVW television starting in January 2004. She competed in many tag team matches.
In May 2005, she entered a tournament for the OVW Television Championship. She won her first match but lost in the next round. She also had a rivalry with Beth Phoenix in July. By October, she started using her real name, Mickie James, in OVW.
Becoming a WWE Star (2005–2006)
Mickie James made her WWE debut on October 10, 2005, on Raw. She played the role of WWE Women's Champion Trish Stratus' biggest fan. Their story showed Mickie becoming more and more obsessed with Trish. Mickie even dressed like Trish for a Halloween costume contest. She also started using Trish's wrestling moves.
Mickie became the top challenger for Trish's title in December. Their championship match at New Year's Revolution saw Mickie lose. However, Mickie's obsession continued, making Trish uncomfortable. In March 2006, Mickie attacked Trish, saying she would destroy her. This made Mickie a "bad guy" in the wrestling story.
Their rivalry ended at WrestleMania 22. Mickie James won the Women's Championship, her first title in WWE! This match is remembered as one of the best women's matches at WrestleMania. Their story continued for a bit longer, with Mickie defeating Trish again in June.
Women's Champion (2006–2008)
Mickie James lost her WWE Women's Championship to Lita in August. After Trish Stratus retired, the Women's Championship became empty. Mickie entered a tournament to find a new champion. She made it to the finals but lost to Lita.
Mickie then became a "good guy" again. She defeated Lita at Survivor Series to win her second Women's Championship. She then had a rivalry with Melina. Mickie lost the title to Melina in February 2007. They had a rematch, which was the first women's "Falls Count Anywhere" match in WWE history. Mickie was not seriously hurt during the match.
In April 2007, Mickie won her third Women's Championship in Paris, France. But she lost it back to Melina right away, making it a very short title reign. Mickie won her fourth Women's Championship on April 14, 2008, in London, England, by defeating Beth Phoenix. She successfully defended her title at Judgment Day. However, she lost her title again at SummerSlam in a tag team match.
Divas Champion and Leaving WWE (2009–2010)
In July 2009, Mickie James started a rivalry with Maryse, who was the WWE Divas Champion. At Night of Champions, Mickie defeated Maryse to win her first Divas Championship. This made her only the second woman to hold both the Women's and Divas titles. She defended the title successfully for about three months.
In October, Mickie lost the Divas title. She was then moved to the SmackDown brand. On SmackDown, she had a storyline with Michelle McCool and Layla, who were called LayCool. This led to a big match at Royal Rumble in January 2010. Mickie defeated Michelle McCool in just 20 seconds to win her fifth Women's Championship! This made her one of the most successful Women's Champions ever.
Mickie lost the title back to Michelle McCool in February. She then had a knee injury that kept her out for three weeks. Mickie's final match in WWE aired on April 23, 2010. She was released from WWE the day before.
Guest Trainer (2013) In November 2013, Mickie James returned to WWE for a week as a guest trainer. She helped train the female wrestlers at the WWE Performance Center.
Return to Independent Wrestling (2010–2016)
After leaving WWE, Mickie James wrestled for many smaller wrestling companies. She returned to the independent circuit in April 2010. She wrestled for promotions like World Wrestling Council (WWC) and Maryland Championship Wrestling (MCW).
In 2011, she became the first Covey Pro Women's Champion. She also made appearances for other companies while still with TNA. In 2012, she wrestled in Scotland for Pro Wrestling Elite. In 2014, Mickie was inducted into the Covey Pro Hall of Fame. She also returned to wrestling after having her child, competing in Queens Of Combat. In 2015, she won the MCW Women's Championship.
In 2016, Mickie James also wrestled for Chikara. She was part of a team called Team Original Divas Revolution. She also worked as a head trainer for Ground Xero Wrestling (GXW) and won the GXW Women's Championship.
Second Return to TNA (2011–2013)
Knockouts Championship Reigns (2011–2013)
On April 17, 2011, Mickie James defeated Madison Rayne in a steel cage match to win the TNA Knockouts Championship for the first time. This made her the first woman to hold the WWE Women's Championship, the WWE Divas Championship, and the TNA Knockouts Championship. She successfully defended her title several times.
In August, Mickie lost the Knockouts Championship to Winter. However, she won it back from Winter on September 1, becoming a two-time champion. She lost the title back to Winter later that month. Mickie continued to challenge for the championship but was unsuccessful.
In May 2013, Mickie James defeated Velvet Sky to become a three-time Knockouts Champion. She then started acting like a "bad guy" again, being sarcastic and attacking Velvet Sky's injured knee. She defended her championship against Velvet Sky and Gail Kim. Mickie lost the Knockouts Championship to ODB in September 2013.
Third Return to TNA (2015)
Mickie James made a surprise return to TNA in January 2015. She had a storyline with Bram about his actions towards her real-life fiancé, Magnus. In April, Mickie announced she was retiring to focus on being a mom. However, James Storm convinced her to have one more match.
In June, James Storm pushed Mickie onto a train track in a storyline. This was done to explain her absence from TV. Mickie returned in July, challenging Storm to a mixed tag team match. She and Magnus defeated Storm and his partner, Serena.
Global Force Wrestling (2015–2016)
In July 2015, Mickie James signed with Global Force Wrestling (GFW). She competed in a tournament for the GFW Women's Championship but did not win.
Return to WWE (2019–2021)
Brand Switches and Departure (2019–2021)
In 2019, Mickie James was moved to the SmackDown brand. She suffered a knee injury in June and had surgery. During her recovery, she worked as a commentator for Main Event.
After 14 months, Mickie returned to Raw in August 2020. She had a rivalry with Natalya and Lana. She challenged Asuka for the Raw Women's Championship but lost. In October, she was not drafted to any specific brand.
She appeared on a special "Legends Night" episode of Raw in January 2021. She also competed in the women's Royal Rumble match. On April 15, 2021, WWE announced that Mickie James had been released from the company.
National Wrestling Alliance (2021–2022)
Mickie James debuted in the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) in June 2021. She announced that she would be an executive producer for NWA EmPowerrr, an all-female wrestling event. She also announced her return to the ring and defeated Kylie Rae at the NWA 73rd Anniversary Show. Her last appearance in NWA was in May 2022.
Third Return to Impact Wrestling (2021–2023)
Fourth Knockouts Championship Reign (2021–2022)
At Slammiversary in July 2021, Mickie James returned to Impact Wrestling after six years. She challenged Impact Knockouts Champion Deonna Purrazzo. At Bound for Glory, Mickie defeated Purrazzo to win the Impact Knockouts Championship for the fourth time! She successfully defended her title against Mercedes Martinez and Purrazzo in a special "Texas Deathmatch".
The Last Rodeo and WWE Appearance (2022–2023)
At Sacrifice, Mickie lost her Knockouts World Championship to Tasha Steelz. After hinting at retirement, Mickie returned in September 2022. She announced her "Last Rodeo," saying she would retire if she lost another match, unless she won the Knockouts World Championship again. She went on a winning streak, defeating several opponents.
She finally defeated Jordynne Grace at Hard To Kill to win the Knockouts World Championship for the fifth time! This ended her "Last Rodeo" on a high note.
On January 7, 2022, Mickie James was announced as a participant in the women's Royal Rumble match in WWE. This was a big moment, as she was still the Impact Knockouts World Champion. She entered the match with her Impact theme music and championship belt. She eliminated Michelle McCool before being eliminated by Lita.
In February 2023, Mickie successfully defended her title against Masha Slamovich. However, due to a real-life injury, she had to give up the title in April 2023.
Return to OVW (2024–present)
In 2024, Mickie James signed with Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW). She now works as the Creative Director, Head of Female Talent, and Executive Producer for OVW's wrestling shows.
Music Career
Mickie James is also a talented country music singer. Her first country music album, Strangers & Angels, was released in May 2010. In December 2010, she released a single called "Hardcore Country." This song became her entrance music in TNA and on the independent wrestling scene.
For her second album, Mickie used a special online campaign to help fund it. Fans donated money and received special items. The album, called "Somebody's Gonna Pay", was released in May 2013. It reached No. 15 on the Billboard Heatseekers charts. She also filmed a music video for the song "Somebody's Gonna Pay."
Mickie James has opened shows for famous country artists like Montgomery Gentry and Rascal Flatts. She has also performed at the CMA Music Festival. In 2014, she worked with country artist Cowboy Troy and fellow wrestler James Storm on a song.
In 2017, Mickie James was inducted into The Native American Music Awards Hall of Fame. She also won "Song of the Year" for her song "Shooting Blanks." In 2018, she won “Best Single Recording” for her song “Left Right Left.”

Personal Life and Hobbies
When Mickie James retires from wrestling, she hopes to own a farm and become a horse trainer. She already owns three Morgan horses and two dogs. Outside of wrestling, Mickie has an Associate of Arts degree in business administration. She also studied for her Bachelor of Arts degree in operations management.
Mickie has a tattoo of a symbol meaning 'love' on her ankle, and a dragon around it. She loves horse riding and American football, supporting the Dallas Cowboys. Mickie James is married to fellow professional wrestler Nick Aldis. They have one child, a son named Donovan Patrick Aldis.
