Early Life
Mickie James was born in Richmond, Virginia. Her parents divorced when she was young. She grew up in Montpelier, Virginia, where she spent a lot of time on her grandmother's horse farm. This led to her love for horseback riding. She also played the violin for five years. After graduating from Patrick Henry High School in 1997, she decided to follow her dream of becoming a professional wrestler.
Professional Wrestling Career
Early Career
James started her wrestling journey in 1999. She joined a wrestling school in Washington, D.C., and made her debut on the independent circuit. She used the ring name Alexis Laree. To get better, she trained at special camps run by famous wrestlers like Dory Funk Jr..
In 2002, she joined a company called NWA: Total Nonstop Action (NWA: TNA). There, she became part of a group called The Gathering, led by the wrestler Raven. She was the only woman to ever compete in the company's Clockwork Orange House of Fun match, a special type of cage match.
World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE)
An Obsessed Fan
In 2005, James joined WWE and appeared on the Raw brand. Her character was the biggest fan of the WWE Women's Champion, Trish Stratus. At first, they were friends and tag team partners. But James's character became more and more obsessed with Stratus.
The story led to a match between them at WrestleMania 22. James defeated Stratus to win her first WWE Women's Championship. This match is remembered as one of the best women's matches in WrestleMania history. The rivalry ended after James attacked Stratus, turning into a villain.
Becoming a Champion
After her feud with Stratus, James had many more championship victories. She lost the title to Lita but won it back at Survivor Series in Lita's retirement match. This was her second Women's Championship.
She later had rivalries with other top wrestlers like Melina and Beth Phoenix. In April 2008, during a show in London, England, James defeated Phoenix to win the Women's Championship for the fourth time.
Divas Champion and "Piggy James" Storyline
In 2009, James won the WWE Divas Championship for the first time by defeating Maryse. This made her one of the few women to have held both the Women's and Divas titles.
Later that year, she was traded to the SmackDown brand. She entered a storyline where the wrestlers Michelle McCool and Layla (known as LayCool) bullied her. They gave her the mean nickname "Piggy James." This story was about standing up to bullies. At the Royal Rumble, James defeated McCool to win the Women's Championship for the fifth time.
James was released from WWE in April 2010. The company said they wanted to go in a new direction with the women's division.
Returning to WWE
James returned to WWE in 2016 for a special match in NXT against Asuka. Soon after, she signed a new contract with the company. She first appeared on SmackDown helping Alexa Bliss.
She later moved to Raw and had a rivalry with Bliss over the Raw Women's Championship. In 2018, she competed in the first-ever women's Royal Rumble match and was eliminated by her old rival, Trish Stratus.
In 2019, James suffered a knee injury that kept her out of the ring for over a year. She returned in 2020 but was released from WWE again in April 2021.
Return to TNA/Impact Wrestling
Knockouts Champion
After leaving WWE in 2010, James returned to TNA. She quickly became a top star in their women's division, known as the Knockouts. In April 2011, she defeated Madison Rayne to win the TNA Knockouts Championship. This made her the first woman to have won the top women's titles in WWE and TNA.
Over the next few years, she won the Knockouts Championship two more times, becoming a three-time champion. She left TNA in 2013.
The Last Rodeo
James returned to Impact Wrestling in 2021. She defeated Deonna Purrazzo to win the Knockouts Championship for a fourth time. While she was champion, she made a special appearance for WWE at the 2022 Royal Rumble. She entered the match with her Impact title, which was a historic moment for both companies.
In 2022, she began a storyline called "The Last Rodeo." She announced that she would retire if she lost another match. She went on a winning streak and eventually defeated Jordynne Grace to win the Knockouts World Championship for the fifth time. She had to give up the title in 2023 due to an injury.
