Buildings in the District
This historic district covers two blocks along Woodward Avenue in Midtown Detroit. Many important buildings here were designed by famous architects. Here are some of them:
Addison Hotel
The Addison Hotel is located at 14 Charlotte Street. Today, it is known as the Addison Apartments. Albert Kahn designed this building. It was built in 1905. The building first had 50 fancy apartments. Later, in the 1920s, it was changed to have 113 hotel rooms. The building is now being fixed up to become 40 apartments.
Fine Arts Theatre
The Fine Arts Theatre is at 2952 Woodward Avenue. This theater had 582 seats. C. Howard Crane designed it. It first opened in 1914 and was called the Addison. The theater closed its doors in 1980.
Crystal Ballroom
The Crystal Ballroom is located at 3100 Woodward Avenue. This building is now called the Crystal Lofts. A market called Zacarro's is on the ground floor. The ballroom was built in 1919. The front of the building was changed around 1936. This was when Woodward Avenue was made wider. New Art Deco designs were added to the front. In 2005, the building was updated. It now has shops on the first floor and 16 homes on the second floor.
Kahn Print Shop
Albert Kahn designed this building. It is located at 3408-3414 Woodward Avenue. It was built in 1919 to be a print shop. For many years, the building was empty. Now, it has been updated to hold retail stores.
Bonstelle Theatre
The Bonstelle Theatre belongs to Wayne State University. It is at 3424 Woodward, at the north end of the district. This building was once the Temple Beth El. Around 1900, Rabbi Leo M. Franklin wanted a new temple building. He asked Albert Kahn, who was a member of the temple, to design it. Building started on November 25, 1901. The first services were held in the chapel on January 24, 1903. The temple was officially opened on September 18–19 of the same year.
